What Is Snoring?
As defined in the dictionary entry, a snore is a "snorting or grunting in a person's breathing while asleep". Often times it is incredibly annoying to others who are trying to get some quality sleep (Ahem, Me). Snoring is definitely a characteristic that a person would want to get rid of, since it is often annoying and irritating to others, which can lead to rifts between people, especially in relationships. This could affect a couple in bed. It's often a nuisance, and I always want to know how to get rid of snoring. First though, I need to learn a bit more about snoring.
Its Causes
Most of the time, snoring is caused when air can't move freely through your nose and mouth during sleep. The culprit is often a narrowing airway, which gets in the way of smooth breathing and therefore its intrusion causes snoring. However, there are many causes of this, and not just from the two most common ones of bad sleep posture and abnormalities in the throat from hereditary issues (which is not dangerous, but simply incredibly annoying!).
There are six common causes of snoring, which include age, the way a person's built, nasal and sinus problems, being overweight or out of shape, alcohol/smoking/medication problems, and sleep posture. We're going to go in depth about each of the causes and how they create that snoring sound.
Getting older is one of the most common ways to begin snoring. Once people begin reaching their middle ages and beyond, their throats constrict, or become narrower. This restricts that open space that air needs to travel smoothly into your body. Also, the muscle tone in your throat begins to decrease once people begin hitting their middle ages.
Gender plays a subtle part in snoring as well. Typically, men have narrower air passageways and are therefore more likely to snore. Narrow throats, cleft palates (roof of the mouth) , enlarged adenoids (mass of tissue between the back of the nose and the throat), and other physical attributes that contribute to people snoring are often a result of genetics.
Nasal and sinus problems also piggyback on the narrow airways that result from gender. These problems will block a person's airways, making it difficult to draw in air smoothly, and will leave a vacuum in the throat. This will usually lead to that snoring sound.
It is also common to find that how athletic a person is often determines whether or not they snore. People that are overweight or out of shape will often have fatty tissue and poor muscle tone, which contributes to snoring. This is why being in shape and being athletic has many uses, because now we find out that it stops snoring as well! Finally, a way to get rid of the most annoying sound in the world, and the one that keeps people from falling asleep!
This cause is probably the most obvious one to think of, and that's that people on drugs, smoking, or alcohol abuse will definitely snore. This is not a question of what if, but they will. Negative effects beyond the obvious ones (lung cancer, cancer, death) include an increasing chance of muscle relaxation in the throat. Without maintaining a smooth tone in the passageway, this will result in heavy snoring.
Also, bad sleep posture will result in snoring. This is why the posture of sleeping on your side is glamorized in books, movies, etc. This is because people don't want you to snore! Sleeping flat on your back will result in muscle relaxation in the throat, and therefore as mentioned above will result in snoring.
How Do We Stop Snoring?
To stop snoring, people need to go through a super-complicated and sophisticated (not really :) ) process. The first step involves finding the cause of snoring, because there are different practices and techniques to solving each cause. A major indicator will be your sleep posture, as that reveals a lot. For example, closed-mouth snoring will often result in a throat issue that needs to be corrected. Open-mouth snoring will often result from the tissues in a person's throat. Sleeping on your back will only result in mild snoring, but snoring in all of these conditions may require more extensive treatment (of course, it is nothing severe).
There are two paths to quit snoring, which include lifestyle changes and bedtime remedies. Lifestyle changes include losing weight, exercise, quite smoking (duh!), avoiding alcohol/sleeping pills/sedatives (duh!), and establishing regular sleep patterns. There are also numerous bedtime remedies.
The first is trying to clear your nasal passages, as stuffy noses will block inhalation and lead to snoring. This can be achieved naturally with a Neti pot, or through nasal decongestants or nasal strips. The second is to keep the air in the bedroom moist with a humidifier, as dry air can irritate the membranes in a person's nose. Also, to correct sleeping on your back, elevating your head about four inches higher than the rest of your body will also do the trick, by making sure that neck muscles aren't crimped. Avoiding caffeine and heavy meals right before sleeping will help, as well as sleeping on your side. Sleeping on your side will be more beneficial towards stopping snoring, since sleeping on your back will mean gravity is more likely to pull your tongue and soft tissues down, thereby obstructing a person's airway.
The Last Snore
If people are living with snorers, like me, then we've finally found out how to stop it! It helps me solve my problem of figuring out how to silence snoring, since it is highly irritating and annoying, and keeps people up at night (if you can sleep through snoring, you're talented!). Now that I have learned all about what is snoring, its causes, and how to correct snoring, I can finally solve my question of living a life snore-free.
